Meeting With Home Secretary

Meeting With Home Secretary

You will be aware that this evening Jan Berry and John Francis, together with a small delegation of officers, met with the Home Secretary.

It was a more constructive meeting than the one last week, and the Home Secretary said she had seen the strength of feeling with the numbers that attended the march and heard what was being said.

She made clear that this would be borne in mind when looking at the 2008/09 negotiations and the possibility of a multi year deal.

The Federation made clear that there was still unfinished business, that officers feel betrayed and that we need to rebuild trust that we can properly negotiate through PNB without Home Office interference. That trust cannot be rebuilt by simply saying we are moving on to the 2008/09 pay settement.

The Home Secretary acknowledged this point, and said she would reflect on how to draw a line under the 2007 deal while looking forward to 2008/09.

It was also made very clear that as Home Secretary she should fight the corner for police, and that she needs to demonstrate to 140,000 officers that she will.

On a personal note many thanks to all who assisted with the many media requests before and on the the day, both regionally and nationally. Our message has cartainly been delivered loud and clear. Well done to all.

Regards
