Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill
The Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill amendments were discussed and voted on in the House of Commons on 6th May 2008.
It seems the government put a 3-line whip on the vote. Regrettably the vote on the specific amendment relating to future decisions taken by the Home Secretary on PAT decisions on police pay was lost. This was despite some notable dissenters from the whip including Home Affairs Committee Chairman Keith Vaz MP.
Jan Berry spoke with Shadow Minister of Justice, Nick Herbert MP after the vote and he has advised that the amendment will not be going back to the Lords as it was a "privileged" amendment related to finance, and will therefore not return.
In the absence of binding arbitration, the Police Federation of England & Wales will, of course, continue to explore opportunities to take this principle forward in the future.
