Statement from Metin Enver
Posted on 24/11/2011
Dear colleagues,
I am sending you the following statement on behalf of Ian Rennie, General Secretary, Police Federation of England and Wales:
"This morning the Chairman and General Secretary of the PFEW met with Tom Winsor and members of his review team.
Following comments made by Winsor at the Police Superintendents' Conference in September, in which Winsor identified a senior PFEW official as stating that the literacy levels required to join the service had been reduced to increase the recruitment of BME officers, Winsor was challenged by the General Secretary to name his source. These comments were highly offensive and were reported in the national media at the time.
Winsor confirmed that he was referring to the comments of the General Secretary. This was challenged as being inaccurate and a misrepresentation of the conversation which had taken place at an earlier meeting on 2 August 2011. It should be clear that the views reported by Winsor were not those of the General Secretary or of the PFEW.
This failure to report comments accurately or to agree to correct this misrepresentation goes to the very heart of the evidence being relied upon by Winsor to determine the outcome of this review.
The Chairman and General Secretary, therefore, had no choice but to terminate the meeting."
We shall also be placing this statement on the PFEW website.
Forwarded for your information.
Regards
Metin
