Indexation of police pensions in payment
Posted on 29/06/2011
Further to the message from Ian Rennie, General Secretary, on 24 February ( below) the Police Federation of England and Wales sought an application to the High Court for a Judicial Review regarding the changes to RPUI/CPI. We have been made aware that this matter will be heard for three days at the Royal Courts of Justice on 25-27 October 2011.
Message from General Secretary re indexation of police pensions in payment – 24 February 2011
Dear Colleagues,
Indexation of police pensions in payment
On 17 February 2011, the Government announced that police pensions, along with other pensions in the public sector and state benefits, would be increased in line with the Consumer Price index (CPI), rather than the Retail Price Index (RPI). Both CPI and RPI are accepted measures of inflation, but in eight out the last 10 years, RPI has been higher than CPI and substantially on some occasions. This means that linking police pensions to CPI rather than RPI would almost certainly see them fall in relative value.
Before considering any further action, lawyers acting on behalf of the PFEW and PNB Staff Side have written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to seek clarification on the Government’s justification for making these changes. We will keep you updated on developments.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Rennie
General Secretary
