So is crime on the rise?
Locally and nationally the Police Federation have made it clear, supported by Civitas that a likely consequence of reducing police numbers, particularly when population is rising and we have economic problems, will be increased crime.
It is also evident that as the UK Statistics Authority report ‘Overcoming Barriers to Trust in Crime Statistics: England and Wales’ makes clear there is misunderstanding and distrust of crime figures. This they say is due to:
- Misunderstanding and distrust of the statistics appears to have arisen because of the known limitations of both sources (BCS and police recorded crime);
- Lack of clarity about which source should be used to identify certain types of crimes;
- Changes to the recorded crime series have led to confusion and to difficulties in understanding long term trends in crime;
- Public perception of the integrity of the crime statistics being influenced by politicians’ use of crime statistics data, which has led to the UK Statistics Authority’s public criticism of their manner of use.
