About Us / Northern Police Convalescent and Treatment Centre

Nearly 500 police officers from North Yorkshire don't currently donate to the Northern Police Convalescent and Treatment Centre (NPC&TC) and so could miss out on vital treatment.

Latest News - Bulletin October 2008

NPC&TC is a registered charity providing physiotherapy and complementary treatments at centres in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and Auchterarder, Perthshire in Scotland. Thousands of officers from police forces in Northern England, North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland currently make regular contributions to the charity, paying the equivalent of just 78 pence per week (£1 before tax). No financial aid is received from local or central government.

Efforts are being made to raise awareness of the charity and the treatment offered at the centres. Publicity Officer Gemma Pettman said: "There will be many reasons why officers choose not to donate to our charity, but we don't want lack of information about our services to be one of them."

She added: "It costs more than £3 million each year to keep our centres open so officers' financial support is absolutely crucial."

Subscribing officers can apply to stay at the two centres on a residential basis, for up to two weeks at a time. Retired officers who have contributed to the charity during their service can stay for one week. Officers needing treatment simply complete an application form (available from Occupational Health, Federation Offices or from www.npch.org) and get it signed by a medical practitioner. It is then submitted to NPC&TC for consideration by a clinical panel. Officers can choose which of the two centres they would like to attend and where possible, their request is accommodated.

So far this year more than 2000 officers have been treated as inpatients at the centres, including 40 from North Yorkshire (an outpatient service is also available in certain circumstances). Most officers had suffered injuries and received physiotherapy but those suffering from illnesses and stress also benefited from the treatments and workshops offered.
