Police Dependent's Trust
The purpose of the Police Dependants' Trust is to assist in cases of need:
- dependants of police officers, or former police officers, who die, or have died, as a result of an injury received in the execution of duty;
and - police officers, or former police officers, who are, or have been, incapacitated as a result of an injury received in the execution of duty, or dependants of such officers.
They also make grants to charities that have as their objective the relief of sickness, or mental and physical disabilities, of police officers, or former police officers. For example the Trust has given grants of £500,000 to both the Southern and Northern Police Convalescent Homes towards the cost of the building extensions.
How does the Trust help?
Where need is established, they can help in a number of ways:
- Maintenance grants
These are awarded to those whose income, after accommodation costs, falls below a defined level. This enables incapacitated officers and dependants to enjoy a better standard of living. - Children's grants
Not just to cover the essentials, such as clothing, but a grant could also be made for the purchase of items such as sports or computer equipment. The trust support children all the way through their schooling and even onto University. - General grants
These are made in a wide variety of situations, but most commonly to incapacitated officers for special adaptations to their car, or for special equipment to help ease their disability, or even to have their homes adapted to suit their particular needs. - Holiday grants
Beneficiaries of the Trust on low incomes can be given a grant to take a holiday, if they otherwise cannot afford to do so. Also, those with special needs can be given assistance, such as the tetraplegic former officer the trust recently sent on holiday to the Canaries accompanied by professional carers. - Funeral grants
These can be made to help at the most difficult of times.
